Securitization of Migration & Resistance
About the Project
The project is funded by the Government of Ontario’s Early Researcher Award (ERA) and studies the nature and human rights implications of recent Canadian legislative and policy changes pertaining to immigration detention and border controls. The aim is to offer a critical analysis of the policy consequences of these measures, in light of the experiences of selected European countries. The project builds upon another SSHRC-funded empirical research (2014-2020) on “The securitization of migration and asylum in Canada” that focused on the changes in Canada’s refugee status determination system. It found that the federal government used security rhetoric to justify the passage of restrictive asylum legislation. These developments dramatically altered the Canadian refugee system and engendered a number of negative consequences, such as increased irregular migration, human trafficking, sanctions against those using the services of migrant smugglers and human rights violations of migrants.
