The Canadian Net-Zero Emissions Accountability Act: A Tepid Response to the Paris Agreement

The Paris Agreement, adopted by 196 parties at the 2015 UN Climate Change Conference, aims to limit global temperature rise to well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels, with efforts to cap it at 1.5°C, above pre-industrial levels.

The article examines Canada’s legislative approach to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 through the Canadian Net-Zero Emissions Accountability Act (“Net-Zero Act“). Given Canada’s historical failures to meet international climate commitments, the Act aims to align with the Paris Agreement’s goals. Does the Act enhance or omit aspects of the Paris Agreement and are the accountability measures sufficient enough to ensure Canada meets it’s climate goals?
